Vanguard Renewables and the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance:
Leading the Organics to Renewable Energy Movement Across America

Dairy Farm

“We are building a coalition of like-minded companies that is committed to our country’s low-carbon future. There are many alliances and sustainability targets; this alliance offers a tangible road map with action steps to fulfill sustainability targets and make a real difference”

– John Hanselman, Chief Strategy Officer

The Farm Powered Strategic Alliance, founded in 2020 by Vanguard Renewables, Unilever, Starbucks, and Dairy Farmers of America, represents a collaborative movement to boost food waste reduction and recycling, and expand renewable energy production across America. The Alliance enables U.S. food manufacturers and retailers to recycle unavoidable food waste on farms where it is combined with farm manure in a Farm Powered anaerobic digester to generate renewable natural gas (RNG). The Alliance is a circular approach that reduces the detrimental environmental impacts of CO2 emissions and offers a pathway to carbon reductions.

Farm Powered Strategic Alliance (FPSA) FOUNDING members

Starbucks FPSA

Starbucks joined the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance as a founding member, repurposing food waste in Starbucks’ supply chain into renewable energy via farm-based anaerobic digesters. The process produces low carbon fertilizer that host farms use to support regenerative agriculture practices, while Starbucks, in turn, helps contribute to a low carbon economy.

DFA

Joining the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance (FPSA) provides DFA with a waste diversion strategy and negative renewable energy pathway that aligns with their science-based goals and provides process efficiencies to DFA plants. DFA intends to recycle manufacturing waste at Farm Powered anaerobic digesters nationwide.

Joining the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance (FPSA) provides Unilever with a circular solution to achieve its waste and decarbonization goals. Unilever has sent zero non-hazardous waste to landfill from its factories since 2014. That journey started in 2010 and was reached six years ahead of the company’s 2020 deadline across its global network of factories.

Farm Powered Strategic Alliance Commitments

Food Waste Commitment

Each Farm Powered Strategic Alliance member commits to pursue the capture of food waste inherent in the farming, manufacturing, and sale of food and beverage products and to recycle that waste on farms via a Vanguard Renewables’ farm-based anaerobic digester built within 100 miles of their manufacturing or distribution facilities. Vanguard also works with Alliance members’ suppliers to recycle their food waste.

Renewable Energy Commitment

Members are committed to renewable energy and have the potential to procure renewable natural gas produced by our farm-based anaerobic digesters.

Vanguard Renewables’ Farm Powered Commitment

Vanguard has created a sustainable model for the treatment of manure and food waste that supports American agriculture. Working alongside farms, Vanguard’s goals are to:

  • Recycle animal manure into renewable energy utilizing farm-based anaerobic digesters
  • Recycle food waste into renewable energy and low-carbon fertilizer via farm-based anaerobic digestion

  • Support regenerative agriculture best practices, improve soil health, and increase crop yields

  • Protect watersheds by controlling the constituent values of the low-carbon fertilizer

  • Significantly reduce farm generated greenhouse gas emissions

Membership Criteria

  • Members sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement and a non-binding Memorandum of Intent

  • Commit to Circularity: contribute food waste and commit to renewable energy

  • Share proof of bona fide sustainability platform
  • Have multi-state locations

We have a partner membership available for select not-for-profit organizations.
